History

Our founder was a visionary. Well before stringent environmental and RCRA Regulations made the proper disposition of waste generations necessary Hans H. Schafft foresaw an opportunity in developing markets for the byproduct streams, obsolete inventory, and off-grade materials that were prevalent in the chemical industry in the late sixties. At that time generators were paying for disposal of their wastes or sending them out for recycle – the true value of the product was not being recognized. That situation, because of little regulation, resulted in many of the EPA Superfund Sites we see today. Mr. Schafft not only realized the value of these materials being disposed of but also did not appreciate what he saw happening to many of the wastes and felt that it was more beneficial to our environment and communities to find a re-use for them. Thus in 1967 with little more than a telephone, pen and paper but with a tremendous knowledge of the chemical industry and people involved, Lehan Sales Company was born.

Growth & Expansion

The beginnings of Lehan Sales centered on the chemical business Mr. Schafft knew best – that of metropolitan New York and New Jersey. It did not take long for major chemical companies to realize the value of this new concept and used the services of Lehan to clean out their warehouses of over-aged and damaged drum product. This required the acquisition of a warehouse facility, bringing in large lots of packaged chemicals, inventorying them and trying to re-sell piece by piece. Not only was this very labor intensive but Mr. Schafft recognized, again, the potential of danger in accidental spills, fire or other calamity that could not only mean the financial destruction of Lehan but involve the companies from whom he purchased. With RCRA laws being enacted and enforced in the late seventies Lehan changed strategy, closed our warehouse and concentrated on developing markets for by-product streams and large spot lot off-grade materials that could be moved from point of generation to point of use reducing the liability of all involved, eliminating unnecessary storage expenses and increasing the rate of return to the generator. A new generation of Lehan Sales Company began and our services were used by large and small chemical producers worldwide.

Future

The future is now. In the early part of this millennium Lehan Sales Company changed the corporate structure to help align us with the new direction and services we were providing. Lehan Sales Company became Lehan Chemical Brokerage Services, LLC. LCBS is a ‘quiet’ company built on respect for our customers. We believe the only good relationship is an honest one where trust and ethics prevail. We will not promise results that cannot be obtained. We do not spread our offerings throughout the chemical broker network as many others do. LCBS works directly with our generators and users or with a Trusted Partner to solve the environmental concerns of those who come to us for help. At Lehan Chemical we have broadened our horizons and now offer expertise in waste management and innovative environmental solutions – though special development of markets for byproduct/off-grade chemicals still remains as the bulwark of our business.
